House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Hearing
January 27, 2011

On Thursday, January 27, 2011, at 10:00 a.m., Grand Central Station, Northeast Balcony, New York City, the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure met to receive testimony regarding developing true high speed rail in the Northeast Corridor. The hearing highlighted the importance of high speed rail to economic development; opportunities and incentives for private sector investment in the Northeast Corridor; and the need for competition and public private partnerships. Immediately following, T&I Committee members participated in an informal roundtable with government and private sector participants to continue and build upon the issues raised and discussed in the formal testimony at the hearing. Title V, Section 502 of the bill directs the Secretary of Transportation to: (1) solicit proposals for projects for an initial high-speed rail system between Washington, DC, and New York City (Northeast Corridor), as well as for additional projects on any other corridor; and (2) examine how to achieve maximum economic development of the Northeast Corridor.
