In the year 2000, Amtrak reached consensus with the Unions and adopted a corporate close call procedure that permitted a close call to be reported to Amtrak management without fear that it would become a disciplinary issue.

As we gather here on Workers’ Memorial Day, I bring you greetings of solidarity and friendship from our Union, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees a division of the Teamsters Union. Workers’ Memorial Day is a day in which we remember and honor our friends, coworkers and loved ones who were prematurely taken from us while working to earn a living for themselves and their families. It is a day that we have set aside to recognize that, despite the best wishes of management, the best efforts of our members and the verbal support from the politicians and government regulators, too many of our members — of America’s work force — are killed and injured while working to support their families.
February 16, 2016 - In the face of a number of years of consistently improving operating ratios on the Northeast Corridor where over 90% of Amtrak Maintenance of Way employees and Signalmen are employed, and even though the compensation and benefits for Amtrak Signalmen and Maintenance of way employees are below those of their brothers and sisters on the commuter railroads, Amtrak has offered flat wages, sought dramatic health benefits concessions that would result in a plan substantially inferior to industry standards and proposed previously rejected changes to work rules to remedy alleged problems not caused by the existing work rules.
